Spring 2021

(last updated 3/6/2021)

GIRLS Registration is CLOSED

BOYS Registration Ramains OPEN until March 19

UPDATED SEASON PLAN

McLean Youth (MYA) Volleyball is committed to the well-being of its players, coaches and referees. Given the recent success of other regional indoor sports in addressing COVID-19 risks plus the well-understood health and mental benefits of sports for children and young adults, MYA Volleyball has elected to proceed with the spring 2021 season.

Based on player and coach registrations plus the number of gym timeslots allocated by Fairfax County, here are the updated plans for the spring season which runs from mid-March to early June.

  1. PARTICIPANTS:
  • Girls - Six girls leagues:
    • 4th & 5th Grade House (combined)
    • 6th Grade House
    • 7th & 8th Grade House (combined)
    • 9th - 12th Grade House
    • MS Select
    • HS Select
  • Boys - Two boys leagues:
    • ES (4th-6th)
    • MS (6th-8th)
  • No Club Players - Active club/travel volleyball players cannot play on an MYA Volleyball team this year. However, HS club players are always welcome to participate as coaches and referees.
  • HS Volleyball Team Players - With most practices starting the week of Aprol 5, those girls coming off high school volleyball teams in mid-April are encourage to join as coaches and referees as well as play in the HS Select league.

  1. PLANNED EVENTS: The season will involve both team practices and scheduled matches.  Whenever possible, some of the matches will be played outdoors.
  • Practices – Each team practices and scrimmages in an indoor gym once a week throughout the season.  Following Fairfax County policies, practices are limited to 60 minutes with only one team practicing in a gym at a time.  In addition to coaches and players, only one Parent Liaison is permitted in the gym (the program details will be announced at a later point).  Most practices start the week of April 5 right after the FCPS Spring Break.
  • Matches – MYA Volleyball will schedule a combination of indoor and outdoor matches.  With the need to use some small Elementary School gyms, indoor matches will be limited to just the players, coaches and referees with one Parent Liaison in the gym per team.  Outdoor matches (weather permitting) on grass fields have several risk advantages with the added benefit of providing parents the opportunity to watch the game live.  MYA Volleyball will NOT live-stream games.  Matches are targeted to start Saturday, April 24.
  • Tryouts – A limited set of tryouts for some of those interested in MSS and HSS will be run during the week of March 15. Details will be announced at a later point
  • Other Events – There are no plans for skills clinics, Froyo Challenge, picture days, playoffs and all-stars games this season.  Also, there are no plans for trophies and medals.

  1. COVID-19 SAFETY MEASURES: MYA Volleyball plans to follow and sometimes exceed CDC, State and County guidelines and policies to ensure the safety of all participants. For more details see the COVID-19 Protocol that will be in effect during the spring season.

  1. SEASON SCHEDULE:
  • March 1: Registration Closes
  • March 9: Deadline to confirm participation and pay the league fee
  • March 16-19: MS Select and HS Select limited tryouts
  • March 22: Team rosters and schedules published
  • March 29-Apr 2: FCPS Spring Break
  • April 5: Team practices begin
  • April 24: Matches begin
  • May 29-31: Memorial Day Weekend - GYMS CLOSED

Thank you for your understanding that these are unusual times and we are doing our best as volunteer organizers to make this work. As everyone is acutely aware, there is no way to completely eliminate the possibility of virus transmission. But we hope that the measures we plan to follow will minimize the risk while still providing an opportunity for our youth athletes to experience the benefits of playing a team sport.

Please feel free to contact me with your questions or concerns.

Regards,
Chuck
